Support Short-Term Comfort
Selected pain-focused stimulation may help some patients tolerate movement or exercise more comfortably.
Supportive Modalities & Taping
Controlled electrical impulses used for selected pain-management or muscle-activation goals when appropriate to your evaluation.
Understand Your Care
Electrical stimulation uses electrodes placed on the skin. Different settings have different purposes: sensory-level stimulation may be considered for temporary pain relief, while neuromuscular electrical stimulation can produce muscle contractions to support activation. These approaches are not interchangeable, and your therapist chooses according to the treatment goal.
Your therapist connects this approach to the findings from your evaluation and the goals you choose together. We discuss what a useful response would look like and whether this treatment belongs in your plan.
Potential Patient Benefits
Selected pain-focused stimulation may help some patients tolerate movement or exercise more comfortably.
When indicated, muscle-focused stimulation can accompany voluntary effort to help recruit a muscle that is difficult to activate.
The goal is to improve participation in useful movement rather than rely only on passive treatment.
Your Visit
We review medical history, implanted electronic devices, skin condition, sensation, and the intended treatment area before choosing settings.
Your therapist explains expected sensations and monitors tolerance. Muscle-activation treatment may be paired with an exercise, while pain-focused use is reassessed for a meaningful benefit.
We check how treatment affects both your symptoms and a relevant movement or activity. Your feedback helps guide the next step, including changing the approach when it is not useful.
Between Appointments
A home unit should be used only with appropriate instructions for electrode placement, settings, duration, and safety. Do not assume that a device purchased online matches your clinical treatment.
Let us know how you feel later in the day and during your normal routine. A treatment that feels comfortable in the clinic should also fit into a manageable recovery plan at home.
Individualized Decisions
Report pacemakers or other implanted electronics, pregnancy, seizure history, skin damage, and reduced sensation. Placement and suitability require screening; increasing intensity is not automatically more effective.
Share your medical history, medications, recent procedures, and any change in symptoms. We can discuss alternatives when a technique is not suitable for you.
Questions About Electrical Stimulation
It may assist muscle activation in selected situations. Progressive exercise and functional training remain important for developing usable strength and activity tolerance.
Your therapist selects complementary approaches around the limitations found during your evaluation. This treatment may be paired with exercise, movement practice, or education when those approaches support your goals.
The schedule depends on your condition, healing stage, progress, and relevant authorization. We reassess your response rather than promising a fixed number of treatments or a guaranteed outcome.
Let’s work toward less pain, more movement, and a stronger you.
